Novak Djokovic starts US OPEN with a win

Novak Djokovic’s had a bumpy start in his first match in this year’s US OPEN. Although Djokovic was an absolute favourite on paper, the Danish qualifier who arrived on court with his tennis kit in an Ikea bag was able to grab a set from the Serb.

The World No 1 began his match as expected, winning the first set with 6-1, but he lost the second in a tie break 6-7 (5-7). However, the young Danish player Holger Rune who is ranked 145 in the world, began cramping in the third set, which is why he only managed to win three games in the next two sets (6-2, 6-1).

The best tennis player at the moment will be looking to add another US Open trophy to his collection and to become the first man to complete the Calendar Grand Slam in 52 years. The Serb already won Wimbledon, Rolland Garros and Australia Open, and now the only Grand Slam left is the trophy at the Flushing Meadows.

With Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem out of this year’s US Open, Djokovic remains the favourite to win the tournament. However, the likes of Alexander Zverev, Dani Medvedev and Mateo Berrettini will be out to ruin Djokovic’s party.
