Mitrovic scores late winner to send Serbia to 2022 World Cup

Aleksandar Mitrovic was the hero in yesterdays game by scoring a dramatic late winner securing Serbia their place in next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Although hosts Portugal and current all-time international goalscorer, Ronaldo, needed just a draw to qualify for the World Cup directly, they fell short. They now will have to book their place in Qatar by playing through the playoffs.

It all started well for the home side, as after a mistake by Gudelj, Renato Sanches was able to make it 1-0 in the 4th minute. However, Serbia completely dominated the game after that, and the reward can in the 33rd minute when Ajax midfielder Dusan Tadic made it 1-1, which was the result in the first half.

After the first half, Serbia introduced Fulham and one of the best strikers in the Premier League last year, Aleksandar Mitrovic, which scored the decisive goal that took Serbia to their second World Cup in the last 12 years.

On the other hand, Portugal will have to play a minimum of two more games if they want to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
