Ema Raducanu has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after winning the US Open for the first time without losing a set along the way.
In the third public vote, the teenager was better than swimming star Adam Peaty and in the second vote against Olympic diver Tom Dale.
The 19-year-old became the first Brit female grand slam winner since 1977, which is why all the bookies in the UK made her the strong favorite to win this year’s award.
However, after testing positive for COVID last week in an Abu Dhabi tournament, Raducanu gave her speech from self-isolation.
In her speech, the young Brint said that it’d been an honor just to be among the nominees and wanted to thank all the fans and voters. She also added that although this year’s highlight was her first grand slam win, playing at Wimbledon in front of her’s home crowd was something that she never felt before.
